An idea for my Action Research Project/Inquiry

After my son 's back eye incident at school on Friday, I have decided the best action research project for me to do is on rise of bullying over the last decade.  Bullying is on the rise thanks to the social media. It has a significant impact on learning, students, and learning culture of school. I am going to go deeper than just bullying and look into how state legislature is affecting school policy on it.   I will look into the potential for training faculty on recognizing bullying and the steps to take to support students that are being bullied and even a staff development on the protocol for reporting bullying and the legal ramifications for the teacher.

  1. Sounds like a great idea! Bullying is one of those "invisible" issues in which it is very hard for teachers to (usually) see it happening. A LONG time ago, I worked at a middle school that had a Peer Mediation class. The students attended an actual 9 weeks course in 7th grade on it and had the option of signing up to be Peer Mediators, under the supervision of their sponsor. Students could then report any issues they had with bullying and other situations through these channels. Excellent topic!

  2. Bullying is definitely a major problem. Not just physical bullying, but cyber bullying through facebook and other media. I think you have a great idea and it sounds like you plan to go far with what you learn from your research. I look forward to following you. :)

  3. Bullying is a definite concern in today's schools. Last year, my son was jumped by a bully simply because he blocked his kick the day before during Football practice. The other boy jumped on top of him at recess and proceeded to choke him as other students watched. Luckily for him, his friend tackled the boy off of him as the teacher came over to see if he was ok...the boy's punishment...he was "Talked to". Consistency in discipline may be another good one!
